As a startup founder and CEO, leadership is arguably my most important responsibility. Yet I’ve so rarely made the space for deep and productive reflection on my leadership practice. I’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, and taken the trainings, but to be honest these have had little meaningful impact on my mindset or performance as a leader.
In this way, my time in Kenya was unlike any professional development experience I’ve ever had. No New York City seminar can match the learning derived from my engagements with Samburu elders alongside entrepreneurs and executives from four different continents, as we ascended the sacred Mt. Ololokwe together. This setting, combined with the Safarini team’s culturally competent and intelligent moderation created an experience that truly reshaped the way I think about my business, my team, and my career. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone looking for professional inspiration and self-discovery.
I took my Safarini journey during a major transitional period. I‘d left my job in San Francisco and was considering a career change and a move abroad. The Safarini experience was hugely influential in solidifying those life-changing decisions. I knew it was a unique opportunity from the start of our expedition through the Wakumbe Hills, when I joined the Maasai community leaders to help divert elephants from the path of a village school.
The experiences, conversations, and coaching that took place in the days that followed altered my perspective of risk, scarcity, and achievement. This has made me more decisive and effective both in my professional role as a manager and in my personal life. The beautiful landscapes and people of northern Kenya, combined with the unique group of people I traveled with created a personal development journey that could not be replicated.
When I signed on to join a Safarini journey, I was in entrepreneurial limbo. My business was doing well, but my co-founder had moved on. I wasn’t sure I wanted to lead alone what had started as a partnership, but I was struggling to make a decision.
Safarini broke me free from the distractions of my day-to-day responsibilities and gave me space to focus on the big picture. I stepped into a radically different physical and cultural environment, which was inspiring but challenging. We struggled to keep up and to understand our Samburu companions.
But with the Safarini team to help unpack the experience, I gained new perspectives and returned with new levels of clarity in some areas of my thinking and some healthy uncertainty in others. Overall I simply felt more adaptable and capable of leading my team through that uncertainty. This is a confidence that continues to benefit me as a leader and entrepreneur.
